How do I prevent an embedded object picture from appearing in the table of contents in a Word 2013?

The pictures of embedded documents (Excel and PDF) are showing up in the description line in the table of contents. Word 2013 is assigning the icons a Heading 1 Style and will not let it be changed to any other style. Is there a way to prevent or override the assigned style?

The final section of the Word document was corrupted.

Once the section was deleted and then added back in the problem went away and the icon no longer showed up in the table of contents. Plus the standard style formatting could then be applied.
